Headed to your local cannabis dispensary to stock up? Before you do, take some time to review New Jersey’s cannabis purchase limits, because there’s only so much cannabis you can buy in a single transaction under state law. This guide on how much weed you can buy in New Jersey will help you plan your shop to suit your sesh.

How much cannabis can you buy in New Jersey per day?

New Jersey law permits the purchase of up to one ounce of cannabis per visit to a dispensary, or the one-ounce equivalent between multiple product types. That type of calculation isn’t always as straightforward, though. Here’s a quick reference guide for how much of each cannabis product you can buy from a New Jersey dispensary.

Daily cannabis purchasing limits in New Jersey

In New Jersey, adult use consumers may buy up to 28.35 grams, or one ounce, of dried cannabis flower in any single visit to a dispensary. To picture an ounce, imagine a standard snack-sized bag of chips; that’s about the legal amount of cannabis flower you can buy at the dispensary. An ounce may last up to a month or more for an average consumer.

Cannabis vape purchase limits in New Jersey

New Jersey allows you to buy up to four grams of oil for vaporizing per transaction. Standard vape cartridges contain one gram of cannabis oil, which means you could bring home an average of four vape carts from a single trip to a cannabis dispensary. Some products may clock in at 0.5 grams, while others may be larger, so always check the label of the product you’re buying or read the details on the menu to confirm.

Vape carts last the average consumer between a few weeks to a month, though if you vape more often, this may not last you as long. How long a vape cart lasts depends on how often you use your vape and how long you draw on it for each puff.

Cannabis extracts and concentrates purchase limits in New Jersey

You can also buy up to four grams of solid cannabis concentrate or resin or the equivalent of four grams of concentrate in liquid form. This limit also extends to four grams of vaporized formulation, commonly referred to as oil. Concentrates can be consumed in a few ways, including dabbing and vaping. How long your concentrates last depends on how often you consume and how much you use each session. Most regular consumers can expect a gram of concentrate to last a week or two.

Cannabis edible purchase limits in New Jersey

In New Jersey, you may purchase edibles with THC content up to 1,000mg per transaction. Considering the average pack of edibles (also known as soft lozenges) contains 100mg — by law, these containers cannot have more than 100mg of THC per package — you can buy up to 10 bags of gummies per transaction.

To put this into perspective, consider a single container of cannabis-infused gummies. If each gummy contains 5mg THC, there are 20 gummies total in the package. If you have one gummy each day, one bag can last you up to three weeks. If you buy 10 bags in a single transaction, that can last you a little more than three months!

Other cannabis product purchase limits in New Jersey

For any other type of cannabis product, such as topicals and tinctures, the purchase limit depends on cannabinoid content. Since you can purchase up to 1 ounce of usable cannabis in a single transaction, these infused products can count toward the total.

For example, consider a topical that contains 400mg CBD and 100mg THC. The combined cannabinoid content of this product would be 500mg, or 0.5 grams toward the 28.35 gram/1 ounce limit.

How much medical marijuana can New Jersey patients buy per day?

Qualifying patients or their designated caregivers can purchase up to 84 grams, or 3 ounces, of medical marijuana per 30-day period. There are exceptions to these limits for terminally ill patients; those with a terminal diagnosis have no limit. Qualified patients need to shop at a medical cannabis dispensary.

How to know how much cannabis you’re buying in a transaction

If you need help calculating how much you’re buying, you can skip all the mental math and ask your budtender. By law, dispensaries must track each cannabis product sold in the store. This includes tracking legally required purchased limits. When you reach the checkout counter, these experts can tally your selections and ensure you’re under the daily limit.

How much cannabis can you carry at one time in New Jersey?

New Jersey law allows you to possess up to six ounces of cannabis or cannabis products at any given time. You should leave any more than six ounces at home to avoid financial and other legal penalties.

Rules around where you can consume your legally purchased cannabis

Although cannabis is legal in New Jersey, there are strict rules regarding where you can and cannot consume your legally purchased products. Under state law, you can smoke, eat, or vape cannabis in the following locations:

  • Private property: You can use cannabis on private property, such as your home or a friend’s home. Property owners do have the right to restrict cannabis use on their property, though, so renters may want to check their leases before lighting up.
  • Dispensaries licensed and zoned for onsite consumption: New Jersey allows the operation of licensed cannabis consumption areas. While lounges aren’t open yet, they’ll soon offer safe and fun spaces to enjoy cannabis.

You can’t consume your cannabis products on federal lands, in federal buildings, or smoke in public spaces where smoking is banned.

What happens if you get caught with weed in NJ?

Possession of up to six ounces of cannabis by an adult is legal in New Jersey. Possession of more than six ounces is not, punishable by up to 18 months imprisonment and a fine of up to $25,000.

Possession within 1,000 feet of a school adds 100 hours of community service to the penalty, as well a variable (depending on quantity) additional fine.

Do dispensaries keep a record of how much you buy?

Dispensaries must see your photo ID to confirm you are 21 or older, but they are not allowed to keep a copy of your ID. Unless you sign up for a loyalty program, the dispensary won’t keep a precise record of what you purchased.

Why are NJ dispensaries cash only?

You may have heard New Jersey dispensaries only take cash, but that’s not true! At Queen City, we take cash and debit cards. Some dispensaries may be cash only because it’s difficult for the cannabis industry to accept credit cards, and sometimes debit cards, due to restrictions out of the dispensary’s control.
