Easy to use, discreet, and portable, there’s a reason why vape pens are among the best-selling cannabis products in the Garden State.

What are THC vape pens?

THC vape pens are cartridges that contain cannabis extract. These cartridges are much more potent than their cannabis flower counterparts. containing anywhere from 50% to 85% or more THC. Comparatively, flower can contain anywhere from 10% to 30% or higher THC.

Types of vape pens sold in New Jersey

A 510-thread vape pen is designed to attach to any standard vape pen battery. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Their features vary, too: You’ll find some models with adjustable temperature settings (called variable voltage) and buttonless auto-draw, among others. Vape pen batteries can be purchased from Queen City, a vape shop, or online.

Each cannabinoid offers its properties and has been studied for its effects in your body. For example, THC has been observed to have anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory, appetite-stimulating, pain reduction, and relaxation properties, among many others. CBD has been widely studied for its anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and anti-seizure properties, among many others.

Disposable vape pens include both the cannabis extract and the battery in one unit. Once you’ve finished the extract inside, the entire unit gets recycled. Despite their name, many disposable vape pens are rechargeable with a standard USB-C or micro USB cable. These products are also sometimes referred to as all-in-one vape pens.

Pod cartridges, such as the AiroPod, are proprietary vape cartridge and battery systems. Unlike 510 thread vape carts, pod cartridges are only compatible with a brand of the same battery.

In New Jersey, AiroPod cartridges are an example of a popular pod cartridge system. These cartridges only work with the AiroPro and AiroSport vaporizers. Other proprietary vape cart systems you may have heard of, but are not currently available in New Jersey, include the Pax Era, Dart pods, Heavy Hitters and STIIIZY pods.

Why try vaping cannabis with cartridges?

Convenience. There’s no need to grind flower, roll a joint, or clean a complicated device after each use. Just attach the cartridge and go. And if you’re buying a disposable vape, you don’t even need to attach a cartridge!

Mess-free. No sticky residue here. With vape carts, there’s no need to touch any kind of cannabis. All the oil is self-contained in the cart.

Discreet. Vape pens attract much less attention than a joint or a bong. Their size and uncomplicated nature are less likely to attract attention. They’re highly portable, too, so they can be stashed in your backpack or purse.

Low odor. While not completely smellproof, vape pens do not have nearly as strong a lingering odor as smoking flower. That’s because vape pens don’t require any combustion and there’s no burning paper to add to a thick, lingering cloud. Vape clouds dissipate quickly and don’t hang around.

What's in a vape cart?

Most THC vape carts are made with distillate, which is a concentrated liquid form of THC. In some cases, terpenes and other cannabinoids are added back into the formula to mimic the source strain from which the THC is derived. Other types of vape carts contain terpene-rich cannabis concentrate such as live resin or rosin.

While much of the focus is on THC, other cannabinoids make their appearance in vape carts as well. You’ll find vape carts with elevated levels of other cannabinoids, including CBD, CBN, and CBG.

Look at the cartridge size

Cannabis cartridges generally come in two sizes — 0.5 grams and 1 gram. Look at the dispensary menu or the packaging to make sure you’re getting the right size.

See the strain information

Many vapes are formulated to mimic the strain from which they’re extracted. Whether you’re a Blueberry devotee or love Tahoe OG, there’s a good chance you’ll find your favorite strain in cartridge form. Ask a budtender about your favorite strains in vape form!

Confirm the connector type

The majority of vape cartridges are outfitted with 510 thread. Double-check that you’re buying the correct connector type — and that you have the right battery to use your cartridge — before making your purchase.

Read the lab reports

New Jersey requires vapes to be tested for its cannabinoid content. This testing gives you confidence in the product you’re buying and helps you have a more informed cannabis experience.

How vapes are tested in New Jersey

All vape cartridges sold at cannabis dispensaries in New Jersey  are tested for harmful additives, cutting agents, and artificial flavorings. A third-party, licensed laboratory tests THC vape carts for unacceptable levels of polyethylene glycol (PEG), propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin or glycerol (VG), vitamin E acetate (VEA), and acetic acid. Vape carts that don’t meet these minimum safety standards are not sold at any New Jersey dispensary.

FAQ about vape carts in New Jersey

Yup. Vape pens contain higher amounts of THC than cannabis flower, so you can expect to feel its effects much stronger than you would flower. That being said, be careful: one hit off a vape pen is definitely stronger than one hit off a joint or bowl. Go slow and take note of how you feel before going in for more.

The THC in a vape pen is the same THC you’ll find in flower and other cannabis products. The difference is the concentration of THC. While cannabis flower can contain anywhere from 10% to 30% or more THC, vape pens contain anywhere from 60% to 90% THC. The average amount of THC you’ll find in a vape pen hovers in the 70% to 80% range.

THC pens are vape pens, but not all vape pens and THC pens. When you’re in a dispensary, with very few exceptions, all vape pens you’ll find contain THC.

Vape pens with THC are called vape pens, vape cartridges, vaporizers, or oftentimes, just “vapes.”
