Located in the Netherwood Section of Plainfield, on the doorstep of Fanwood and Scotch Plains, Queen City has officially opened its doors!
Once a preschool, the building now houses the first independent legal cannabis store in New Jersey’s Union County. Where many neighbors have declined to allow cannabis companies to operate in their towns, Plainfield has embraced cannabis with open arms, celebrating right alongside us at our Sept. 7th ribbon cutting.
Queen City Dispensary: a crown jewel in Plainfield’s evolution
Aptly named after Plainfield, also called “the Queen City,” the dispensary at 1353 South Avenue proudly embraces its local heritage. The ceremony took place in front of the freshly painted mural featuring scenes of city landmarks and state symbols, embracing the city’s importance in the dispensary’s day-to-day operations.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Plainfield Mayor Adrian O. Mapp shared insights into the city’s ambitious billion-dollar economic development campaign aimed at revitalizing real estate across the city. The conversion of this former preschool into Queen City Dispensary is a shining example of this vision turned into reality.
“Over two years ago, I met with Jennifer Brandt and Justin Singer to discuss the possibility of having the dispensary in the City of Plainfield, and the rest is history,” Mayor Mapp shared with the big crowd that gathered for the opening. “We are all here to witness the grand opening of a business that will provide jobs [and] revenue, and will be a part of the transformation of the landscape of the City of Plainfield.”
A day of celebration in Plainfield
Leading up to the ribbon cutting was a ceremony mastered by Plainfield’s Economic Development Director Zenobia Fields, featuring remarks from various community leaders and city administrators. Despite temperatures in the 90s, Queen City’s parking lot was filled with well-wishers and soon-to-be shoppers, awaiting the moment that the dispensary formally opened its doors to the public for the first time. Queen City budtenders and managers were on hand with cold water bottles for the crowd, but nothing could cool down the excitement for the opening!
As the ceremonial ribbon (complete with oversized scissors) fell just after 4:20 p.m., the line to enter Queen City snaked down the block as friends and neighbors came to make the first purchases from our dispensary. DJ Troy’s beats filled the air while well-wishers enjoyed churros and other delights from Plainfield’s favorite food truck, Atomo Arepas.
Among the highlights of the event included a proclamation that Sept. 7th will be Queen City Remedies Day in Plainfield. This moment forever etched this date into the city’s history and further tied our love of Plainfield to our company mission.
Queen City: rooted in community
City Council President Charles McRae and Queen City team member Justin Singer shared their perspectives at our opening celebration, echoing the sentiment that the central New Jersey dispensary is poised to become an integral part of the city’s fabric. Their words resonated, affirming the transformative power of this moment.
“It’s an honor to stand here on behalf of the entire Queen City team, who have deep roots here. We are residents, and we hope to serve the community well. We take that responsibility to heart,” said Singer.
Other visionaries behind Queen City Dispensary include owner Jennifer Brandt, a proud native of Plainfield, andassistant general manager Ariell Hunt, who previously directed the preschool that once resided in the Queen City space. The dispensary is committed to uplifting the local community as well, proudly ensuring that at least one-third of the shop’s 30 employees are city residents.
Once inside, a curated cannabis experience
Operating as an independent dispensary, Queen City focuses on providing New Jerseyans with a wide selection of products available throughout the state. Within the sales floor, a glass showcase presents an array of packaged products for sale and cannabis flower displays, where buds can be examined under a magnifying glass.
The menu offers a curated range of products, from flower and pre-rolls to concentrates, edibles, vaporizers, and more. The dispensary’s budtenders are trained and poised to assist patrons of all kinds, whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a newcomer taking your first steps into the world of cannabis.
The very walls of the dispensary pay homage to the city Queen City calls home. Outside the storefront — and the perfect backdrop to Queen City’s opening celebrations — is a signature mural from award-winning artist Danielle Mastrion, showcasing Plainfield’s hometown heroes and local landmarks. When you walk into the dispensary after checking in, you’re greeted by a collage of framed prints that celebrate all things New Jersey and cannabis, from inspired weed-themed art to the iconic Frank Sinatra mugshot. It’s true Jersey, and we’re here for it.
